High Shoals Falls

I can’t count how many times I’ve jumped into the chilly water at High Shoals Falls. Ever since I found this hidden oasis over a decade ago in college, I have been making my way back any chance I get.

Name: High Shoals Falls
Trailhead: Take Forest Service Road 283 just outside of Helen, Ga and continue for 1.5 miles until you see the High Shoals parking pull-off.
Mileage: 2.4 miles (roundtrip)
Difficulty: Moderate
Distance from Atlanta: 2 Hours

Located in the Chattahoochee National Forest, this is a favorite spot for locals. While it sees much less traffic than most other trails it remains well maintained, although because of the inclines, it can be a bit treacherous if muddy. From the parking pull-off, you will descend a series of switchbacks down to the creekbed. Following the stream, meander down the mountain laurel covered path making your way closer to the valley floor until you begin to hear the rushing sound of water. Continuing on, the path will narrow and bend around a thick patch of overgrowth, but you can look through and just make out that you’re standing only a few yards from the top of the waterfall. A hundred or so yards more down the path and you will have snaked your way to a wooden observation deck looking out at the waterfall and the natural pool below.

Make sure you bring your bathing suit; the water depth ranges from calf-deep to over my 6’3 head.  The water may be cold, but nothing is more refreshing after the hike down. Especially if you make the trip in the notoriously humid Georgia summer. If you are making the trip in the early morning or evening hours keep an eye out as this is a watering hole for many species who make this mountain their home. You have a chance of seeing everything from a white-tailed deer to black bear!

Protip: Make this destination part of a weekend camping trip. Campsites are plentiful and the trailhead for one of my favorite hikes, Indian Grave Gap to Tray Mountain, is accessed off Forest Service Road 283 as well. You’re also just a few miles away from other places to explore like Helen, Ga, Amicalola Falls, and about a dozen hiker friendly wineries!
